Use SpecStream in Gemini
Add SpecStream to the Gemini app as a custom app, or to Gemini CLI as an MCP server. Ask for a list in your own words, approve the price, and get results with their sources.
What you need
- A SpecStream account. Start free: $10 of work for 30 days, no card.
The server address is the same for every client:
Connect
Gemini app
- On a computer, go to gemini.google.com, click Settings at the bottom, then Connected Apps.
- Under Custom apps, choose Add a custom app and paste the server address.
- Click Next, sign in to SpecStream, and review what Gemini asks for.
Type @ and pick SpecStream to make sure Gemini uses it. Once added on the web, it works in the Gemini phone app too. For now Google offers custom apps in English, on personal Google accounts (not work or school), with Keep Activity on.
Gemini CLI
Add SpecStream to ~/.gemini/settings.json, then run /mcp auth specstream to sign in:
Or use an API key
Create an API key
- Open Agents & API in the workspace and choose API keys.
- Choose Create API key. Give it only what the task needs: read, prepare or execute permissions, the projects it may use, an expiry and a spending limit.
- Copy the key when it's shown. It isn't shown again.
Gemini CLI takes the key as a header instead of signing in:
Try it
Once Gemini shows SpecStream's tools, ask in your own words:
Use SpecStream to find every bakery in Lyon rated 4.6 or better on Google Maps, with its phone and opening hours. Show me the price first.
SpecStream reads the request back and gives you the price. Nothing is spent until you approve a maximum, and you pay only for the matches, each with its source.
Set access and spending limits
An agent works on your account, with the same balance, permissions and spending limits you have. Give its key the least it needs: read, prepare or execute permissions, project limits, an expiry and a spending ceiling. Paid work needs an approved price with a ceiling, and reading, exporting and sharing cost nothing.
