Use SpecStream in Claude
Add SpecStream to Claude as a custom connector by its address, or to Claude Code with one command. Then ask for a list in your own words.
What you need
- A SpecStream account. Start free: $10 of work for 30 days, no card.
The server address is the same for every client:
Connect
- In Claude, go to Customize > Connectors and click Add custom connector. On a Team or Enterprise plan an Owner adds it under Organization settings > Connectors, and members then click Connect on the connector marked Custom.
- Name it SpecStream and paste the server address as the MCP server URL.
- Leave OAuth client on Use Claude's published identity, and Authentication on Sign in now.
- Click Add, then Connect. Sign in to SpecStream and review what Claude asks for.
- In a chat, click +, choose Connectors, and make sure SpecStream is on.
Or use an API key
Create an API key
- Open Agents & API in the workspace and choose API keys.
- Choose Create API key. Give it only what the task needs: read, prepare or execute permissions, the projects it may use, an expiry and a spending limit.
- Copy the key when it's shown. It isn't shown again.
Add the connector
- In Claude, go to Customize > Connectors and click Add custom connector.
- Name it SpecStream and paste the server address as the MCP server URL.
- Set Authentication to No sign-in. Under Request headers, choose the header name
authorizationand enter the valueBearer YOUR_SPECSTREAM_API_KEY: the word Bearer, a space, then your key. Mark it Required. - Click Add. In a chat, click +, choose Connectors, and make sure SpecStream is on.
Claude stores the header value and doesn't show it again. On a Team or Enterprise plan an Owner adds the connector under Organization settings > Connectors (Add, then Custom), and the key becomes the organization's, so create it for that use.
If you don't see Request headers: sign in with a registered application
Request headers are in beta in Claude, and only some organizations see the section. Without it, Claude connects through sign-in.
- In the workspace, open Agents & API, choose OAuth applications, then Register application. Name it Claude, set the redirect address to
https://claude.ai/api/mcp/auth_callback, and choose the access level. Copy the client ID. - In Claude's Add custom connector dialog, paste the server address. Set Authentication to Sign in now and OAuth client to Use your own OAuth client, then enter the client ID and leave the secret blank. If your dialog shows one screen, these sit under Advanced settings.
- Click Add, then Connect. Sign in to SpecStream and review what Claude asks for. Claude asks you to sign in again when the connection expires.
Claude Code
Add the server from your terminal. Create a key first, as above.
The default scope is local: private to you and the current project. Use --scope user to have SpecStream in every project, and don't use --scope project with a key in it, because that file is shared through version control. Run /mcp in Claude Code to see the server and its tools.
Without a key, add the server and sign in:
Then run /mcp in Claude Code, pick SpecStream, and sign in to SpecStream in the browser window that opens.
Try it
Once Claude shows SpecStream's tools, ask in your own words:
Use SpecStream to find dental practices in Florida with three or more locations. Leave out practices owned by a dental service organization. Show me the price before you start.
SpecStream reads the request back and gives you the price. Nothing is spent until you approve a maximum, and you pay only for the matches, each with its source.
Set access and spending limits
An agent works on your account, with the same balance, permissions and spending limits you have. Give its key the least it needs: read, prepare or execute permissions, project limits, an expiry and a spending ceiling. Paid work needs an approved price with a ceiling, and reading, exporting and sharing cost nothing.
More
- MCP connection details, including the 97 tools.
- The REST API, the SDKs and command line, and everything your agent can do.
- How quotes and billing work.
