Use SpecStream in Perplexity

Add SpecStream to Perplexity as a custom remote connector. Ask for a list in your own words, approve the price, and get results with their sources.

What you need

  • A SpecStream account. Start free: $10 of work for 30 days, no card.

The server address is the same for every client:

Server address
https://api.specstream.ai/mcp

Connect

  1. Go to Account settings > Connectors, click + Custom connector in the top right, and choose Remote.
  2. Name it SpecStream and paste the server address as the MCP Server URL.
  3. Set Authentication to OAuth 2.0 and Transport to Streamable HTTP. Perplexity finds SpecStream's sign-in on its own.
  4. Save, sign in to SpecStream, and review what Perplexity asks for.

Or use an API key

Create an API key

  1. Open Agents & API in the workspace and choose API keys.
  2. Choose Create API key. Give it only what the task needs: read, prepare or execute permissions, the projects it may use, an expiry and a spending limit.
  3. Copy the key when it's shown. It isn't shown again.

Add the connector

  1. Go to Account settings > Connectors, click + Custom connector in the top right, and choose Remote.
  2. Name it SpecStream and paste the server address as the MCP Server URL. HTTPS is required, and SpecStream's address is.
  3. Set Authentication to API Key and paste your key. Set Transport to Streamable HTTP.
  4. Save the connector, then turn it on in a conversation.

On an Enterprise plan an admin controls this under Enterprise settings > Permissions > Connectors permissions, and has to allow custom connectors before anyone adds one.

Try it

Once Perplexity shows SpecStream's tools, ask in your own words:

Use SpecStream to find datasets on urban tree canopy published since 2020 under an open license. Include the publisher and the license. Show me the price first.

SpecStream reads the request back and gives you the price. Nothing is spent until you approve a maximum, and you pay only for the matches, each with its source.

Set access and spending limits

An agent works on your account, with the same balance, permissions and spending limits you have. Give its key the least it needs: read, prepare or execute permissions, project limits, an expiry and a spending ceiling. Paid work needs an approved price with a ceiling, and reading, exporting and sharing cost nothing.
