Zed

Ask for live web data from Zed's agent panel and get structured records back, with the same saved requests, results, projects, and balance as your SpecStream workspace. You see the price before anything runs.

SpecStream for ZedCoding agents

What you need

  • A SpecStream account. New accounts get $10 of work on sign-up, no card.
  • Zed, with its agent panel.
  1. 1. Add the server

    In Zed, open Settings, then AI, then MCP Servers. You can also run the agent: open settings action and select MCP Servers.

    Select Add Server, then Add Remote Server, and use https://api.specstream.ai/mcp as the URL.

  2. 2. Sign in to SpecStream

    When Zed asks you to authenticate, your browser opens the SpecStream sign-in. Sign in and approve the access Zed asks for. Zed starts this sign-in when the server has no Authorization header.

  3. 3. Ask the agent

    Describe the records you want in the agent panel, and the details to bring back on each one. For example:

    In the agent panel
    Find open-source TypeScript libraries that parse iCalendar files, with each one's license, latest release date, and repository.
  4. 4. Or edit the settings file

    Run zed: open settings file and add SpecStream under context_servers. A remote server takes a url:

    Zed settings file
    {
    "context_servers": {
    "specstream": {
    "url": "https://api.specstream.ai/mcp"
    }
    }
    }
  5. 5. Or connect with an API key

    Use a key on a machine with no browser, or when you would rather not sign in. In the workspace, open Agents & API, choose API keys, then Create API key, and give it a spending limit. Then add it to the entry as a header.

    Keep the key in your user settings file. A settings file you share or commit should hold only the URL.

    Zed user settings file
    {
    "context_servers": {
    "specstream": {
    "url": "https://api.specstream.ai/mcp",
    "headers": {
    "Authorization": "Bearer <your SpecStream API key>"
    }
    }
    }
    }

What happens when you ask

Ask in plain words, or ask the agent to call compile with your request. SpecStream reads it back as editable parts, and quote_capacity_work prices it. Nothing is spent until you approve the maximum. authorize_capacity_work then starts the work, and rows arrive with the source URL and read time on every value.

To find saved work, ask the agent to call list_specs or list_projects. To keep results up to date, ask for a schedule: the request reruns hourly to yearly inside your spending limits, and each rerun labels what changed. See schedules and the agent guide.

Run a local server instead

Install the stdio proxy with pip install specstream-mcp-stdio. Then add an entry under context_servers whose command is specstream-mcp-stdio, with args set to [] and env setting SPECSTREAM_API_KEY to your key.

Cost

Reading a request and pricing it cost nothing. Each row that matches costs 5¢, 15¢ or $1, depending on how much the row needs, plus 5¢ for a person's email and 15¢ for a phone. A quote lasts 30 minutes, and a run that finds nothing costs nothing. How quotes and billing work

Disconnect

Remove SpecStream from MCP Servers in Zed, or delete its entry under context_servers. On SpecStream's side, revoke Zed's access in Settings, or revoke the key in Agents & API. Results you saved stay in your workspace. Questions go to [email protected].

More

SpecStream for Zed covers what it does in Zed on one page. Every other tool has its guide in Connect your tools. You see the most a request can cost before it starts, and the matches are paid from your balance. Billing has the details. For help, email [email protected].
