Hex
Add SpecStream to Hex as a custom MCP server. Hex's agent asks for live web data in plain words, shows the most a request can cost, and brings back the records.
SpecStream for HexData & warehousesWhat you need
- A Hex Team or Enterprise plan. External apps are in beta.
- A Hex Admin to add the server, and the Explorer workspace role or higher for everyone who uses it.
- A SpecStream account. New accounts get $10 of work free, with no card.

1. Add SpecStream as a custom MCP server
As a Hex Admin, go to Settings, then Integrations, or to Context Studio, then Apps. Choose + Custom MCP server.
Enter
SpecStreamas the Name. In Description, say what the app does, because the agent reads it to decide when to call the tools. Enterhttps://api.specstream.ai/mcpas the Server URL.Description - 2
2. Choose OAuth and save
For the authentication method, choose OAuth. People then sign in to SpecStream in a window Hex opens. Hex's docs say a server that supports automatic registration needs nothing more, so leave Advanced alone. Save, and SpecStream becomes available for people to connect.

3. Pick the tools Hex allows
This step is optional. On Settings, then Integrations, click the tool count beside SpecStream, or open its ⋯ menu. Switch individual tools on or off, choose what happens to tools added later, and click Save. Tools you switch off are hidden from people's settings, and the agent knows they are unavailable.

4. Connect your account
Each person goes to Settings, then Connected apps, then External apps, finds SpecStream, and chooses Connect. Sign in to SpecStream in the window that opens. Hex turns the app on for you. Connecting changes only your own account.

5. Ask before anything is paid for
Next to SpecStream, open the ⋯ menu and choose Tool Settings. Set
authorize_capacity_workto Always ask. When the agent reaches it, Hex shows an approval prompt with the tool name and its arguments, and nothing runs until you accept. - 6
6. Ask in a thread
In a thread, open the + menu and check that SpecStream is on. Then describe what you need and where:
SaaS companies in London that use HubSpot, with their websiteSpecStream reads the request back so you can see how it understood it, then gives the most the request can cost. Approve that amount and the run starts. The results come back with the source URL and read time of each value.
Whose account pays
With OAuth, each person signs in to their own SpecStream account, so a request runs on that account's balance and limits.
An API key instead of a sign in
Hex also takes a credential in place of OAuth. With User provided, each person enters their own Bearer token. With Include credentials for users, an Admin sets one credential that everyone uses. Use a SpecStream API key as the Bearer token. Create the key in your workspace under Agents & API and give it only the projects, operations and spending limit the task needs.
A shared key means everyone on the server spends from the account that owns it, so set its total, per run and monthly limits.
Where it works
External apps work in Hex's agent chats. Hex's docs say they are not available from the CLI, the API or other headless entry points.
If a connection shows Expired
Reconnect it from Settings, then Connected apps. For OAuth, this runs the sign in again.
Cost
Connecting SpecStream to Hex costs nothing on SpecStream's side. SpecStream bills your balance for the records that match a request, never above the maximum you approved, and a request that finds nothing is free. Balance, quotes, and billing has the rates.
Disconnect
Under Connected apps, open the ⋯ menu next to SpecStream to disconnect it. To end the sign in on the SpecStream side, open Agents & API in your workspace, choose OAuth applications, and revoke Hex. Your saved results stay put. Questions go to [email protected].
