SerpAPI alternatives: get the data behind the search results
SpecStream is the best alternative to SerpAPI for teams that buy searches to build data. A SerpAPI call returns one results page as JSON, and every successful search is counted, including one that comes back empty. The facts you need sit on the pages behind those results, and reading them, matching them to your conditions and joining them into records is work your code does after the call. SpecStream is the live web data engine for teams and agents: you ask for the data in plain words and get structured rows read from the pages themselves, priced before the run and billed only for the rows delivered.
New accounts get $10 of work for their first 30 days, no card.
SpecStream and SerpAPI side by side
| SpecStream | SerpAPI | |
|---|---|---|
| What you send | The data you want in plain words, with the conditions every row must meet | A query to one engine endpoint: Google, Bing, Baidu, Yandex, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, YouTube, Amazon, Maps and about 150 more |
| What you get back | Structured rows, one record per company, place or filing, with facts from many sites joined. Source URL and read time on every value | One results page as JSON (organic results, local results, knowledge graph), raw HTML or Markdown |
| Data already held | Public databases read every morning at specstream.ai/data: every company that filed a Form D since 2023 with its filing history, nearly 2 million US nonprofits, every US bank failure since 1934, federal rules, open federal contracts and grants, and local businesses. Signals such as funding rounds, new executives and layoffs at specstream.ai/signals. Ask for your own cut of any of them | No database of records. Each call reads a results page live, and an identical call within 1 hour returns the cached copy. Search Archive returns your own past searches for 31 days |
| A list you already have | Import a CSV, Excel file, Google Sheet or Airtable base of up to 20,000 rows. SpecStream fills in or checks each row and matches it to one identity, with any namesakes shown alongside their evidence. Import is free. A row that matches pays its rate, and a row that does not costs 5¢ | One search per row, sent through the API, its client libraries in 10 languages, the CLI or MCP |
| The unit you pay for | A delivered row: 5¢, 15¢ or $1 by how much the row needs, plus 5¢ for an email and 15¢ for a phone. The same rate on every plan | A search. Paid plans from $25 a month for 1,000 searches to $275 for 30,000, which is $25.00 to $9.17 per 1,000 |
| What failed or empty work costs | Nothing. A row left out, a retry and a run that finds nothing are not charged | Errored and failed searches are not counted. A search that returns no results counts as 1 search |
| The cost cap before a run | The most the run can cost, quoted before it starts. Nothing runs until you approve it, and there are no automatic overages | A monthly plan of searches. When it runs out, you renew by hand or turn on Automatic Early Renewal |
| Reruns and change labels | Hourly to yearly. Each row comes back labeled changed, unchanged or no longer matching. A changed or new row costs half its rate, an unchanged row 1¢ | An identical call within 1 hour returns the cached results, not a new read. Change labels: not stated |
| MCP and API | MCP server, REST API, Python and TypeScript SDKs, a CLI and A2A. An agent can buy one request with no account, by card or in USDC | Hosted MCP server and API. MCP searches come out of the plan |
| Where the data goes | Google Sheets, Excel, Airtable, Notion, monday.com, HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Attio, Slack, Teams, Zapier, Make, n8n and signed webhooks | API and MCP responses as JSON, HTML or Markdown |
Why SerpAPI buyers move to SpecStream
One request covers the search and the pages behind it
A results page tells you where the facts might be. The facts themselves sit on company sites, registers, filings and stores. On SpecStream you write what you want: "dental clinics in Austin that offer online booking, with the owner and a phone", or "SaaS companies in Germany hiring a head of sales, with the job post". SpecStream reads the request back as parts you can edit, the conditions every row must meet and the facts to bring back, then searches the live web, reads the pages and returns one row per match.
You pay for rows, and the searches behind them are free
With SerpAPI, building 200 company rows means paying for every query you ran to find them, then writing and running the code that reads each result. On SpecStream 200 rows at 5¢ cost $10, and the searches and pages behind them are not billed. A row costs 5¢ with up to 5 facts, 15¢ with up to 15 facts and one set of related records, and $1 for a deep row with no limit.
An empty search costs nothing
SerpAPI counts a search that returns no results as a search. On SpecStream a company left out costs nothing, a retry costs nothing, and a run that finds nothing costs nothing.
The price is set per job, before it runs
A SerpAPI plan is sized in searches per month, bought ahead of the work. On SpecStream every request gets a quote of the most it can cost, good for 30 minutes. Nothing runs until you approve it, the charge never goes past that amount, and whatever the run does not use goes back to your balance.
Reruns tell you what changed
Save the request and it reruns hourly to yearly. Each row comes back labeled changed, unchanged or no longer matching, and new matches arrive in Slack, email, a sheet, a CRM or a signed webhook. A changed or new row costs half its rate and an unchanged row costs 1¢. Rows land in Sheets, HubSpot, Salesforce, Slack and the other tools your team uses, or in your agent through the MCP server.
Other SerpAPI alternatives
Bright Data SERP API
Search results as JSON, Markdown or raw HTML, billed per successful request. Pay as you go is $1.50 per 1,000 requests, and the Scale plan is $499 a month with 380,000 requests included, then $1.30 per 1,000. Like SerpAPI, it returns the results page, and reading the pages behind it is still your work. SpecStream returns the rows read from those pages.
Exa
A search API. Search costs $4 (lite) or $7 (auto) per 1,000 requests and returns links with text, highlights or summaries. Exa Agent costs $0.012 to $1.00 a request at a fixed effort level. Each request is billed on its own, while SpecStream bills only the rows delivered, under a maximum you approve first.
Firecrawl
Search, Scrape, Crawl and Agent endpoints billed in credits. Search costs 2 credits per 10 results and a page costs 1 credit, a 403 or 404 page included, on paid plans from $19 a month for 5,000 credits to $749 a month for 1,000,000. On SpecStream the searches and pages read to find a row are not billed.
How to switch from SerpAPI
Write the data you want in plain words, in place of the queries you send today. Sign up and you get $10 of work for your first 30 days, no card. At 5¢ a row, that is up to 200 rows.
Or send the request from code. This call spends nothing: the 402 reply shows how SpecStream read the request, the columns and the most it can cost.
curl -i https://api.specstream.ai/v1/agent/lists \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"request": "Dental clinics in Austin that offer online booking, with the owner and a phone", "count": 25}'Approve that maximum by card through Stripe's Link agent wallet, or in USDC, and you pay only for the rows found. On an account, your agent uses the MCP server at https://api.specstream.ai/mcp and your team uses the workspace, from the same balance.
