# Tavily alternatives: from search results to finished rows

SpecStream is the best alternative to Tavily for teams whose agents need data, many rows that each meet a set of conditions. A Tavily search returns ranked results with a title, URL, snippet and score, and a Research run returns a cited report or one object in your schema, all billed in credits. Checking each result against your conditions and joining the facts into one record per company is still work your agent does after the call. SpecStream is the live web data engine for teams and agents: your agent asks in plain words and gets structured rows that meet every condition it sent, priced before the run and billed only for the rows delivered.

## SpecStream and Tavily side by side

|  | SpecStream | Tavily |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What you send | The data you want in plain words, with the conditions every row must meet | A search query, URLs to extract, a site to crawl or map, or a Research question with an optional output schema |
| What you get back | Structured rows, one record per company, place or filing, with facts from many sites joined. Source URL and read time on every value | Ranked results with a title, URL, content and score, plus an optional answer or the raw page. Research returns a cited report or one object that matches your schema |
| Data already held | Public databases read every morning at [specstream.ai/data](https://specstream.ai/data?utm_source=alternatives&utm_campaign=tavily): every company that filed a Form D since 2023 with its filing history, nearly 2 million US nonprofits, every US bank failure since 1934, federal rules, open federal contracts and grants, and local businesses. Signals such as funding rounds, new executives and layoffs at [specstream.ai/signals](https://specstream.ai/signals?utm_source=alternatives&utm_campaign=tavily). Ask for your own cut of any of them | No database of records. Search can serve Tavily's cached copy of a page, and `max_age_hours` sets how old that copy may be, from 1 to 720 hours, or 0 for a live fetch |
| A list you already have | Import a CSV, Excel file, Google Sheet or Airtable base of up to 20,000 rows. SpecStream fills in or checks each row and matches it to one identity, with any namesakes shown alongside their evidence. Import is free. A row that matches pays its rate, and a row that does not costs 5¢ | One call per row, sent through the API, the Python or JavaScript SDK, Zapier, Make or n8n. Its docs describe a data enrichment use case built on these APIs |
| The unit you pay for | A delivered row: 5¢, 15¢ or $1 by how much the row needs, plus 5¢ for an email and 15¢ for a phone. The same rate on every plan | A credit: $0.008 pay as you go, or $0.0075 to $0.005 on monthly plans from $30 for 4,000 credits to $500 for 100,000. A basic search is 1 credit, an advanced one 2, and a Research run 4 to 110 credits on mini or 15 to 250 on pro |
| What failed or empty work costs | Nothing. A row left out, a retry and a run that finds nothing are not charged | A failed URL extraction or map is not charged. What a failed or empty search or Research run costs: not stated |
| The cost cap before a run | The most the run can cost, quoted before it starts. Nothing runs until you approve it, and there are no automatic overages | A credit range per Research model. When the monthly credits run out, requests stop until the credits reset or you upgrade |
| Reruns and change labels | Hourly to yearly. Each row comes back labeled changed, unchanged or no longer matching. A changed or new row costs half its rate, an unchanged row 1¢ | Scheduled reruns: not stated. Change labels: not stated |
| MCP and API | MCP server, REST API, Python and TypeScript SDKs, a CLI and A2A. An agent can buy one request with no account, by card or in USDC | Remote and local MCP server, API, Python and JavaScript SDKs, and the `tvly` CLI |
| Where the data goes | Google Sheets, Excel, Airtable, Notion, monday.com, HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Attio, Slack, Teams, Zapier, Make, n8n and signed webhooks | API responses as JSON. Zapier, Make and n8n integrations |

## Why Tavily buyers move to SpecStream

### One request covers the search, the reading and the record

A search result tells your agent where the facts might be. The facts sit on company sites, registers, filings and stores. On SpecStream your agent writes what its person needs: "medical device makers in Germany that state ISO 13485 on their own site, with a sales contact", or "open city and county tenders in Texas for school bus routes, with the due date". SpecStream reads the request back as parts it can edit, the conditions every row must meet and the facts to bring back, then searches the live web, reads each page and returns one row per match.

### Rows your agent can use as they arrive

A Tavily Research run returns one report or one object for the question it was given. A SpecStream run returns a row for every match, and it keeps working until it reaches the count, for up to four hours on the largest lists, long after the agent's context would have run out. A result that fails one of the conditions is not delivered and not billed. For any row, `get_find_decisions` returns each condition's answer with its reason, the value, the source and the time it was read.

### You pay for rows, and the searches behind them are free

With Tavily, building 200 company rows means paying credits for every search, extraction and Research run the agent sends to find them. On SpecStream 200 rows at 5¢ cost $10, and the searches and pages behind them are not billed. A row costs 5¢ with up to 5 facts, 15¢ with up to 15 facts and one set of related records, and $1 for a deep row with no limit. A company left out, a retry and a run that finds nothing cost nothing.

### The price is set per job, before it runs

Tavily states a credit range for each Research run, and a plan is sized in credits per month. On SpecStream every request gets a quote of the most it can cost, good for 30 minutes, and pricing it spends nothing. Nothing runs until the agent or its person approves that maximum, the charge never goes past it, and whatever the run does not use goes back to the balance.

### Reruns tell you what changed

Save the request and it reruns hourly to yearly, after the conversation that started it has ended. Each row comes back labeled changed, unchanged or no longer matching, and new matches arrive in Slack, email, a sheet, a CRM or a signed webhook. A changed or new row costs half its rate and an unchanged row costs 1¢. Rows you already own are never charged again.

## Other Tavily alternatives

### Exa

A search API. Search costs $4 (lite) or $7 (auto) per 1,000 requests and returns links with text, highlights or summaries. Exa Agent costs $0.012 to $1.00 a request at a fixed effort level. Each request is billed on its own, while SpecStream bills only the rows delivered, under a maximum you approve first.

### Parallel

Separate Search, Extract, Task, FindAll and Monitor APIs. Every FindAll run has a fee, from $0.10 to $10.00, plus $0.00 to $1.00 per match, and a cancelled run is charged for the work done. Search costs $1 to $5 per 1,000 requests. On SpecStream one request covers the search, the reading and the record, and a run that finds nothing costs nothing.

### Firecrawl

Search, Scrape, Crawl and Agent endpoints billed in credits: 1 a page, 4 more for JSON and 2 per 10 search results, on paid plans from $19 a month for 5,000 credits to $749 a month for 1,000,000. A 403 or 404 page costs 1 credit. On SpecStream the pages read to find a row are not billed.

## How to switch from Tavily

Write the data your agent needs in plain words, in place of the searches and Research questions it sends today. Sign up and you get $10 of work for your first 30 days, no card. At 5¢ a row, that is up to 200 rows.

Or send the request from code. This call spends nothing: the `402` reply shows how SpecStream read the request, the columns and the most it can cost.

```
curl -i https://api.specstream.ai/v1/agent/lists \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"request": "Medical device makers in Germany that state ISO 13485 on their own site, with a sales contact", "count": 25}'
```

Approve that maximum by card through Stripe's Link agent wallet, or in USDC on Base, Arbitrum or Polygon, and you pay only for the rows found. On an account, your agent uses the MCP server at `https://api.specstream.ai/mcp` and your team uses the workspace, from the same balance.

## Frequently asked questions

Something we didn't answer? [Talk to a human](https://specstream.ai/talk-to-a-human.md)

What is the best Tavily alternative?

SpecStream. Your agent asks for the data in plain words and gets structured rows that meet every condition it sent, read from the pages behind the search results. The most a run can cost is approved before it runs, and only delivered rows are billed.

What does SpecStream cover?

SpecStream covers the whole job of getting data from the web. It searches the live web, reads every page that holds the facts, and extracts them into rows. It draws on the public databases it already holds, fills in or checks a list you bring, reruns on a schedule with every change labeled, shows places on a map, and delivers the rows to your sheet, CRM, Slack or agent through MCP and the API. Tavily covers the search step and the reading of results: search, extract, crawl, map and research calls, each billed in credits.

How is SpecStream different from Tavily Research?

Tavily Research takes one question and returns a cited report or one object in your schema, for 4 to 250 credits a run. A SpecStream request returns a row for every match, each meeting every condition, priced for the whole dataset before it runs. It reruns on your schedule with each row labeled, and it delivers into your sheet, CRM, Slack or agent.

Can my agent see and approve the price before a run?

Yes. The quote names the most the run can cost, and pricing it spends nothing. The run starts only when the agent sends that maximum back, and the charge never goes past it. With no account, an agent can buy one request by card or in USDC.

Does SpecStream have an MCP server?

Yes, at `https://api.specstream.ai/mcp` over Streamable HTTP, with OAuth or an API key. Connecting an agent is free on every plan, and it spends from the same balance as your team, inside the limits you set on its key.
